A pneumatic conveying system is an industrial material handling method that uses airflow as the driving force to transport powdery, granular, and other bulk materials through enclosed pipelines. Compared with traditional mechanical conveying equipment, pneumatic conveying offers flexible pipeline layouts, enclosed transportation, a high degree of automation, and reduced environmental pollution. It is widely used in the cement, chemical, grain processing, pharmaceutical, power generation, and food processing industries.
How does a pneumatic conveying system work? What are the main stages of its operating process? This article provides a detailed explanation.
A pneumatic conveying system mainly relies on a blower or air compressor to generate airflow, creating a certain pressure difference or air velocity inside the pipeline. When materials enter the conveying pipeline, they are carried by the airflow in a suspended or moving state and transported to the designated destination.
Depending on the operating pressure and conveying method, pneumatic conveying systems are generally classified into positive-pressure conveying, negative-pressure conveying, and combined positive- and negative-pressure conveying.
Positive-pressure conveying: Uses compressed air generated by a blower to push materials through pipelines. It is suitable for medium- and long-distance conveying and multi-point distribution.
Negative-pressure conveying: Uses vacuum equipment to create negative pressure and draw materials into the pipeline. It is suitable for multi-point material collection and applications where dust leakage needs to be minimized.
Combined positive- and negative-pressure conveying: Integrates both methods to provide flexible material transportation according to production requirements.
Power equipment mainly includes Roots blowers, air suspension blowers, and air compressors. These devices provide stable airflow for material transportation. Equipment selection should consider conveying distance, material characteristics, system pressure, and required airflow.
Feeding equipment delivers materials into the conveying pipeline at a controlled rate. Common equipment includes rotary feeders, screw feeders, and storage hoppers. A stable feeding rate helps prevent pipeline blockages and reduced conveying efficiency.
The conveying pipeline serves as the main channel for material transportation. Its design should consider conveying distance, the number of bends, and material characteristics.
Separation equipment generally includes cyclone separators and bag filters, which separate materials from the airflow to achieve material collection and air purification.
The system also includes valves, pressure sensors, filters, silencers, and automatic control systems. These components regulate airflow, monitor operating conditions, and ensure equipment safety.
First, inspect the blower, pipelines, valves, and filtration devices to ensure that everything is in normal working condition. Then start the power equipment according to the operating procedures to gradually establish stable airflow and working pressure.
When the conveying airflow reaches the required operating conditions, start the feeding equipment and deliver materials evenly into the pipeline. The materials are carried by the airflow in a suspended or moving state toward the destination.
When materials reach the end of the conveying pipeline, they enter a cyclone separator or another gas-solid separation device. Larger particles settle into the storage hopper under gravity, while fine dust is collected by downstream dust removal equipment.
After separation and filtration, the cleaned air is discharged or recycled according to system design requirements. For processes requiring gas recovery, an air circulation system can be installed to improve resource utilization.
After material conveying is completed, stop the feeding equipment first and allow the airflow to continue for a certain period to remove residual materials from the pipeline. Then shut down the power equipment according to the operating procedures to reduce material accumulation and the risk of pipeline blockage.
Airflow and pressure must match the material characteristics and pipeline design. Insufficient airflow may cause material accumulation, while inadequate pressure may prevent the system from meeting the required conveying distance and capacity.
Particle size, density, moisture content, and flowability all affect conveying performance. Meanwhile, pipeline diameter, the number of bends, and pipeline layout influence system resistance and must be properly designed.
Regularly inspect filters, valves, pipelines, and blower operating conditions. Timely cleaning of blockages and repair of air leaks can help reduce energy consumption and extend equipment service life.
A pneumatic conveying system uses power equipment to generate airflow, transports materials through enclosed pipelines, and collects them through gas-solid separation equipment.
Its operating process mainly includes airflow establishment, material feeding, pipeline conveying, gas-solid separation, and shutdown cleaning. Proper equipment selection, optimized pipeline design, and regular maintenance can improve conveying efficiency and ensure the long-term stable operation of industrial production systems.
