The 2SK Liquid Ring Vacuum Pump is a well-established type of equipment used in industrial vacuum systems. It is suitable for applications requiring continuous vacuum operation, including chemical processing, pulp and paper, food processing, and power generation. Compared with some dry vacuum pumps that have strict requirements for gas cleanliness, liquid ring pumps offer better adaptability to humid gases, water vapor, and small amounts of entrained liquid. As a result, they remain widely used in many industrial applications.
The core component of the 2SK pump is an impeller installed eccentrically inside the pump chamber. Before starting, a certain amount of working liquid, usually water, must be added according to the equipment requirements. When the impeller rotates, centrifugal force causes the liquid to move along the inner wall of the pump casing, forming a continuous liquid ring.
Because of the eccentric position of the impeller relative to the liquid ring, the volume of the chambers between the impeller blades continuously changes. When the chamber volume increases, the pressure inside decreases and gas enters through the suction port. As the impeller continues to rotate, the chamber volume decreases and the gas is compressed before being discharged through the outlet. This process is continuously repeated to generate a stable vacuum.
The liquid participates in gas compression while also providing sealing and cooling. Therefore, the 2SK pump can handle water vapor, condensable gases, and small amounts of entrained liquid relatively well. However, the temperature of the working liquid directly affects vacuum performance. As the liquid temperature increases, its saturated vapor pressure also rises, which can reduce the ultimate vacuum level achievable by the pump.
Before starting the pump, check whether the pump body, pipelines, and valves are properly connected. Make sure the working liquid supply is normal, and inspect the motor, electrical wiring, and coupling. When starting the pump after installation or maintenance, manually rotate the shaft to confirm that the impeller turns smoothly without noticeable binding.
After startup, monitor the vacuum gauge, motor current, vibration, and operating noise. Make sure the suction and discharge passages remain unobstructed. During operation, pay particular attention to the flow rate and temperature of the working liquid. If the vacuum level drops, the pump temperature rises abnormally, or unusual noise suddenly appears, the pump should not be allowed to run under faulty conditions for an extended period. Stop the equipment and inspect it promptly.
The working liquid is essential for stable operation of a liquid ring vacuum pump. During routine maintenance, maintain an appropriate liquid supply and regularly check water quality. If the liquid contains excessive impurities, scaling, blockage, or internal wear may occur. Drainage and replacement should therefore be carried out according to actual operating conditions.
Regularly inspect bearings, mechanical seals, couplings, and the impeller. If continuous leakage, abnormal bearing temperature, increased vibration, or obvious impeller wear is detected, corrective action should be taken promptly. For pumps operating continuously for long periods, it is advisable to establish a routine inspection record based on operating hours rather than waiting until an unexpected shutdown occurs.
First check the temperature and supply rate of the working liquid, followed by the suction pipeline for air leakage or blockage. If these conditions are normal, inspect the impeller and internal clearances for excessive wear.
When abnormal vibration occurs, check the coupling alignment, bearing condition, and whether the impeller is rubbing against other components. Also inspect the pump chamber for foreign matter. If abnormal vibration is accompanied by increased motor current, stop the pump promptly to prevent further damage.
If continuous leakage occurs around the sealing area, inspect the mechanical seal, shaft sleeve, and related connection points. Worn sealing components should be replaced according to the pump model instead of simply tightening the connections as a temporary solution.
A 2SK liquid ring vacuum pump should not be considered properly operated simply because it can start normally. In actual applications, the system should be configured according to the properties of the gas being handled, the required vacuum level, and the working liquid conditions. Special attention should be paid to material selection and working liquid management when operating under high-temperature conditions or with corrosive or contaminated gases.
Overall, the 2SK pump has a mature design and good adaptability to wet gas and demanding operating conditions. Its maintenance requirements are also relatively straightforward. Proper control of the working liquid, regular inspection of seals and bearings, and timely troubleshooting of vacuum abnormalities can help reduce unplanned downtime and keep the equipment operating reliably.
