ZBK Roots vacuum pumps are a common type of mechanical booster vacuum equipment, mainly used in industrial applications that require a high pumping speed and stable vacuum performance. Their core structure consists of a pump body, end covers, synchronous gears, and a pair of figure-eight-shaped rotors. The rotors rotate synchronously in opposite directions inside the pump chamber while maintaining precise clearances.
Compared with conventional mechanical vacuum pumps, ZBK Roots pumps feature a relatively simple structure, high rotational speed, and strong pumping capacity. In practical applications, they are usually combined with a backing vacuum pump to form a complete vacuum system, thereby expanding the operating range and improving overall pumping efficiency.
The working chamber of a ZBK Roots pump does not contain traditional pistons or blades. Instead, it mainly relies on two rotors to form periodically changing working volumes. A certain clearance is maintained between the two rotors and between the rotors and the pump housing. Synchronous gears ensure the correct relative position of the rotors during operation.
This non-contact operating method reduces mechanical friction inside the pump chamber, allowing the pump to operate at relatively high speeds while reducing maintenance requirements related to internal lubrication.
After the equipment starts, the motor drives the main rotor, which in turn drives the other rotor to rotate in the opposite direction through the synchronous gears. As the rotors rotate, the working space on the inlet side gradually increases, allowing gas to enter the pump chamber. The rotating rotors then enclose the gas in the space formed between the rotors and the pump housing and transport it toward the outlet side.
When the enclosed gas space connects with the outlet, gas backflow occurs on the discharge side, causing changes in the pressure inside the working chamber. The gas is subsequently discharged from the pump. This process is continuously repeated as the rotors rotate, enabling continuous pumping.
ZBK Roots pumps generally have no internal compression and are therefore not suitable for operating directly from atmospheric pressure. Under medium- and high-vacuum conditions, they are usually equipped with backing pumps, such as rotary vane pumps or dry vacuum pumps. The backing pump performs the initial evacuation, while the Roots pump provides high pumping speed under lower pressure conditions.
This combination accommodates both the initial start-up stage and the high-vacuum operating stage and is a common configuration for Roots vacuum systems.
ZBK Roots pumps have several notable technical advantages in practical applications. On the one hand, the rotors do not directly contact each other or the pump chamber during operation, resulting in relatively low mechanical friction and smooth operation. On the other hand, the pump provides a high pumping capacity and can maintain a relatively high pumping speed within a certain vacuum range.
In addition, the pump chamber does not contain complex exhaust valve structures, making the overall design compact and relatively easy to install and maintain. For some processes with strict cleanliness requirements, the oil-free pump chamber also provides certain advantages.
ZBK Roots pumps can be used in chemical processing, metallurgy, food processing, electronics, vacuum drying, and vacuum treatment. In these applications, where both high pumping capacity and stable vacuum conditions are required, Roots pumps can provide effective performance.
After installation, particular attention should be paid to rotor operation, synchronous gears, the lubrication system, and connecting pipelines. Before starting a new pump, the pump chamber should be checked for foreign matter, and the gear oil level should be inspected according to the specified requirements.
During operation, the allowable pressure differential should not be exceeded. Temperature rise, vibration, and abnormal noise should also be monitored. For systems consisting of a Roots pump and a backing pump, the pumps should be started in the proper sequence to prevent excessive pressure differentials, increased motor load, or abnormal temperature rise.
Overall, ZBK Roots pumps have considerable value in industrial vacuum systems due to their high pumping capacity, compact structure, and stable operation. With the continuous development of manufacturing processes and vacuum technology, their structural design, sealing performance, and automatic control systems still have room for further improvement.
In the future, by integrating dry backing pumps and intelligent monitoring systems, ZBK Roots pumps are expected to play a greater role in more complex and clean vacuum processes.
