Rotary blowers are widely used in rural domestic wastewater treatment, small integrated wastewater treatment systems, community wastewater treatment stations, and decentralized wastewater treatment projects. Their primary function is to provide a stable air supply for biological treatment processes, supplying oxygen for microorganisms to break down organic pollutants. They can also be used for gas transfer in certain processes.
For small-scale wastewater treatment projects, equipment selection affects not only treatment performance but also energy consumption, operating noise, and maintenance costs. Therefore, rotary blower selection should not be based solely on purchase price. Treatment capacity, process requirements, site conditions, and operating hours must also be considered.
Airflow is the primary parameter when selecting a rotary blower. Different wastewater treatment projects vary in daily treatment capacity, pollutant concentrations, and aeration processes, resulting in different air supply requirements.
Before selecting equipment, determine the required airflow according to the process design, taking into account pipeline losses, aeration device resistance, and variations in treatment load. Insufficient airflow may lead to inadequate dissolved oxygen, reducing microbial activity and treatment efficiency. Excessive airflow, on the other hand, can increase energy consumption and affect the stability of the aeration system.
Therefore, equipment selection should be based on process design parameters and the manufacturer's performance curves rather than estimates based solely on treatment capacity.
The operating pressure of a rotary blower must meet the resistance requirements of aeration pipelines, diffusers, and other auxiliary equipment. For aeration tanks installed at greater depths, the hydrostatic pressure generated by the water depth must also be considered.
Insufficient blower pressure may prevent proper air delivery. Operating continuously at excessively high pressure can increase motor load, raise operating temperatures, and consume more energy.
The selection process should therefore account for aeration depth, pipeline resistance, and terminal equipment resistance. The blower must meet actual operating requirements and be equipped with appropriate pressure protection devices in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations.
Small wastewater treatment facilities often operate for extended periods, making energy consumption and noise important selection criteria. When comparing models, users should evaluate power requirements under actual airflow and pressure conditions rather than relying solely on the motor's rated power.
For projects located in residential areas, underground equipment rooms, or near buildings, noise and vibration should also be considered. Depending on site conditions, silencers, vibration isolation devices, and acoustic enclosures can help reduce environmental disturbances.
Rotary blowers should be installed in dry, well-ventilated locations that allow convenient maintenance. Exposure to rainwater, excessively high ambient temperatures, and accumulated dust should be avoided. Appropriate intake filters should be installed to prevent contaminants from entering the equipment.
Sufficient maintenance clearance should also be provided to facilitate inspections of the lubrication system, filters, and transmission components.
For wastewater treatment projects with strict continuity requirements, standby blowers may be considered based on downtime risks and budget constraints. A duty-and-standby configuration allows the standby unit to maintain the necessary air supply during maintenance or unexpected failures of the main unit, reducing the risk of treatment interruptions.
For smaller projects with limited budgets, maintenance schedules and emergency response plans should still be established in advance.
During operation, the lubricating oil, intake filters, belt tension, and equipment temperature should be checked regularly according to the manufacturer's instructions. Abnormal noise, vibration, and air leakage should also be monitored.
If airflow decreases, pressure becomes abnormal, or temperatures continue to rise, possible causes such as clogged filters, pipeline leakage, changes in operating load, and equipment wear should be investigated promptly to prevent minor problems from developing into equipment shutdowns.
Lower-priced equipment does not necessarily have a lower overall operating cost. Electricity expenses, replacement parts, maintenance services, and service life should also be considered when evaluating total life-cycle costs.
Wastewater quality, aeration methods, operating loads, and environmental conditions vary between projects. Before selecting a blower, users should verify the required airflow, operating pressure, and operating hours to avoid continuous overloading or excessive equipment sizing.
When selecting a rotary blower for a small-scale wastewater treatment project, key considerations include airflow, operating pressure, energy consumption, noise levels, installation conditions, and maintenance requirements. Scientific equipment selection based on process design, combined with proper filtration, lubrication, heat dissipation, and standby equipment configuration, can improve air supply stability and reduce operating costs, supporting the long-term reliable operation of wastewater treatment systems.
